Ostomy Supplies

Ostomy

When a patient has a disease of the digestive or urinary systems sometimes part of the small intestine, colon, rectum, or bladder must be removed. When this occurs, there must be a new process for the waste to leave the body. When a surgeon creates a new opening in the patients stomach this is called ostomy. The opening that is created is referred to as the stoma. Nurses who specialize in Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing specialize in the treatment of patients with acute and chronic wounds with evidence-based practice as well as ostomy patients, who have some kind of bowel or bladder diversion. This specialized practice is known as WOCN’s and has a specialized certification from the Nursing Board Certification.

Three common forms of ostomy are lleostomy, which is when the surgeon removes the colon and rectum and attaches the bottom of the small intestine to the stoma, Colostomy, which is when the surgeon removes the rectum and attaches the colon to the stoma, Urostomy, which is when the surgeon attaches the ureters to either the small intestine or the abdominal wall.

Ostomy Products

MedicalGoods carries a large inventory of ostomy supplies including adhesive remover, barrier sprays and wipes, convex rings, fecal management systems, flanges, ostomy bags, ostomy pouches both drainable and closed, ostomy belts, ostomy cements, deodorant sprays, skin barriers, stomahesive, stoma lubricants, stoma irrigation, tube attachments, urostomy drainage kits, urostomy pouches, wound pouches, and wafers.

Ostomy and the resulting stoma can be a sensitive topic to patients new to having to use urostomy supplies. To help alleviate the initial concerns that come with having a stoma most medical facilities have counselors to help talk through the challenges with patients. Ostomy bag covers can also be used to help minimize the visibility of the ostomy bags.

One of the biggest question patients with ostomy needs ask is should I keep using the drainable pouch which I was given in the hospital or should I switch to the disposable colostomy bags? There are two main reasons patients use the drainable bags, lack of knowledge and practice with the disposable bags and the lower cost of reusing the product instead of having to purchase additional bags frequently. Patients like the convenience of using the disposable ostomy pouches as these pouches are faster to change, allow for more frequent stoma cleanings, and the disposable pouches are faster to dispose of.

Ostomy paste is used to even out the surface of the stoma area which helps to create a tighter seal for your pouch attachment while also protecting the sensitive peristomal skin. Since the bond is more secure this allows patients to have a more secure and comfortable feeling.
